Shepherd's Center of Greensboro, incorporated in 1987, is a member of a national network of about 90 nonprofit organizations modeled after the original Shepherd's Center founded in 1972 in Kansas City.

Those who are committed to the Shepherd's Center concept view the growing population of older adults as a resource for the creation and maintenance of community, as persons who enrich society out of the fullness of their experience and who are effective links between the past and the future.

All Shepherd's Centers have five characteristics:

  • Responsibility for their operation is vested in older adults themselves.
  • The focus is on strenghthening community through cooperative relationships.
  • Churches and synagogues provide resources, communication channels, and inspiration.
  • Unmet needs are a priority, building partnerships without duplication.
  • Volunteer time and skills as the basic resources, financial support comes from nongovernmental sources.

Participation in this unique interfaith organization of older adults is open to all men and women of retirement age who wish to use their time, talents and experience in positive ways to help each other. Some home services that encourage and support independent lifestyles are available to eligible persons age 60+.
